The Bayview Hospital Pharmacist will be responsible for dispensing prescription medicines and will be involved in the purchasing and quality testing of medicines in accordance with the Drug Regulations of Barbados. The Pharmacist may also prepare medicines, as in some cases treatments need to be tailor-made for individual patients.
Essential Functions:
- The Pharmacist must possess the ability to work carefully, methodically and accurately with medicines and doses – this is vital as mistakes could prove fatal.
- Ensure that the Pharmacy Department follows all rules and regulations stated by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.
- He/she is responsible for maintaining an adequate stock of drugs and medical supplies.
- Provides support to medical and nursing staff through the provision of efficient pharmaceutical services and timely filling of prescriptions/orders.
- Maintains accurate records and demonstrates prudence in spending.
- Gives instructions to patients as instructed by physicians or surgeons. Seeks clarity on prescriptions to prevent harm to the patient.
- Interviews and counsel patients as it pertains to compliance, informing them about adverse reactions, interactions with alcohol, foods, other medication, and other citrus like grapefruit. Collects feedback, documents and provides education.
- Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, etc.).
- Liaises with sales representatives of pharmaceutical companies and makes recommendations to doctors and hospital management regarding the purchasing of drugs.
- Maintains pharmacy and medical supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies.
- Manage staff, supervising and delegating appropriate tasks to his/her assistant.
- Perform administrative tasks, such as ensuring needed products are stocked, invoices are input, inventory managed and required reports are generated in a timely manner and submitted to the Assistant Hospital Administrator on the second Monday of the new month.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy with a minimum of two (2) years experience or an Associate degree in Pharmacy with a minimum of five (5) years experience.
