The Bayview Hospital is seeking a qualified medical practitioner, who is fully registered with the Medical Council of Barbados to assist with the management of the Bayview Urgent Care Department and ensure coverage of patients on the general medical floors.  

The successful candidate takes direction from Consultant physicians for any elevated emergency care or admissions to Bayview Hospital and under their direct guidance, assists in the review and management of care of patients. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Take patient histories and perform physical examinations of a patient. Record (written or via computer) or dictate the history and physical in the medical record. 
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic studies. 
  • Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies or various other therapies.  
  • Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings to recognise early stages of serious medical, emotional or mental problems in the patients and act expeditiously whenever necessary. 
  • Establish differential diagnoses, make appropriate treatment plans and initiate emergency treatment. 
  • Prescribe or administer treatments, therapies, medications, vaccinations, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.  
  • Monitor patients’ condition and progress and re-evaluate treatments as necessary. 
  • Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.  
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding mental and physical health, including dietary advice, disease prevention and various treatments. 
  •  Carry out procedures on patients to remove, repair, or improve functionality of diseased or injured body parts and systems.  
  •  Perform diagnostic/therapeutic procedures.      
  • Referrals to consultant physicians at Bayview Hospital, health practitioners, agencies and resources, patient management and managing patient admission to and discharge from hospital. 
  • Direct and coordinate activities of the Hospital’s Emergency Medical Technicians and other staff members as necessary.  
  • Liaise with the Nurse Manager to assist with coordinating the activities of the Nursing Team, when needed.  
  • Prepare Governmentally mandated reports  

Qualifications  

  • ACLS, BLS qualifications 
  • PEARS, NALS (Optional) 
  • PALS (Optional but favoured) 
  • Ensure that medical indemnity insurance is current. 

Experience 

  • Medical Doctor for more than 3 years 
  • ICU and/or Emergency experience. 
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills 
  • Excellent Communication skills; oral and written 
  • Ability to multi-task and perform well in stressful situations
